The hardest part of organizing years of photos is often deciding where to start. You do not have to finish the entire archive to make one part of it more useful.
Choose a small collection
Begin with one holiday, one year, or one person’s photographs. Gather copies in a working folder and avoid deleting originals while you are still sorting. The goal of the first session is a clear method, not a dramatic reduction in the total.
Add context while you remember it
Record names, places, and approximate dates. A simple text note beside a group of photos can preserve details that will matter later. If you are uncertain, say so rather than creating a confident but incorrect label.
Keep more than one copy
Decide how your household will keep and retrieve the collection. Understand which service or device holds the originals and what happens if access to an account is lost. Test that you can actually open a saved copy.
Share a finished piece
Choose a small album to print or share with relatives. Ask them what they remember and add their notes. A usable collection of twenty photos can bring more pleasure than a perfect organizational plan that never gets started.
