The Associated Press reported losses by five of its top seven teams on October 17: Georgia, Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama and Texas. Miami won 43–35 over Florida State in double overtime, adding to the discussion about the next No. 1.

The new Sunday poll had not been verified when this article was prepared on October 18 in the morning. We are not labeling a projected order as the official ranking.

Check the week, then the source

Open the AP's poll page below and confirm the date. A search result may show last week's table even while an article beside it discusses this week's games. A headline containing “prediction” or “projected” describes someone's forecast.

Look beyond the movement

When the new table is available, compare each team's position with its previous position, then read the accompanying explanation. A change in rank can reflect other teams' results as well as that team's own performance.

For a more useful conversation, ask which result changed your view of a team's strengths and weaknesses. That question holds up better than treating every one-place movement as a sweeping judgment.
