For many Social Security recipients, the birthday on the worker’s benefit record determines the payment Wednesday. SSA’s general schedule is: birthdays on the 1st through 10th, second Wednesday; 11th through 20th, third Wednesday; 21st through 31st, fourth Wednesday.
If you receive benefits on another person’s record, the relevant birthday is that person’s, not necessarily yours. This is one reason a spouse’s deposit can follow a different pattern from the one a quick online calculator suggests.
Check for an exception
SSA’s calendar places people who received Social Security before May 1997, and people receiving both Social Security and SSI, on a different schedule: Social Security is generally paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st. Holidays and weekends can shift scheduled dates, so use the published annual calendar for the actual day.
Make the calendar useful
Record the next three deposit dates, not just the phrase “third Wednesday.” The gap between monthly payments varies, which can make a weekly grocery budget feel tighter in some months.
Keep benefit notices and bank transactions together when checking an unexpected deposit. Confirm the program name and the month covered before calling it a missing or duplicate payment. If a payment has not arrived, follow SSA’s current instructions on the official calendar and contact your bank or SSA through its official channels.
